Candy Cane Cookies


  • 1 ¼ cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup softened butter
  • ½ tsp peppermint extract
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 3 ¼ cups flour
  • Red and green food coloring


Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg and peppermint extract. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt along with the milk. Spoon one quarter of the dough onto wax paper; knead in a few drops of red food coloring to tint pink. Repeat with another quarter of dough and green food coloring. To form each candy cane: Pinch off about a teaspoon each red or green dough and plain dough; roll each into a pencil thing strip 5 long. Place strips side by side, pressing ends together; twist to form rope. Place ropes on prepared cookie sheet, bending into cane shape. Bake at 350 for about 10 minutes.
